Ash Sensei enjoys sharing the benefits of his experience with others ” when you take on the responsibility of Yudansha (dan grade) as well as your own continued development it’s also about what you give back to Karate rather than what you take. To enable others to enjoy the many benefits this martial art has to offer.” Hawkes Sensei is a humble man ” there are many people more technically proficient in Shotokan Karate than I, but my journey of 39 years has been my own, like everyone’s it is unique. Karate is a very personal thing that everyone can apply to their day to day living”.
“Kihon (Basics) and Kata (formal exercise/pattern) are where the secrets are! Good Karate is forged in Kihon and the understanding of ones own limitations. At the same time understanding there are limitiless possibilities one can achieve. All this through the honest and natural practice of Kihon, Kumite and Kata, as ‘shapeless’ Karate, the fundamentals of Shotokan Karate-do.”

Sally Hawkes
2nd Dan Instructor
Sally has been training in Shotokan Karate for nearly 20 years now. She first saw Karate when her Husband was practice at home. She was then captivated by it’s strangeness. After taking her Son Jason to a local Karate Class Sal wanted to start properly training herself. She sought the advice of her Husband he thought it was best if Sal & Jason were taught by another Instructor. So a short while after Jason started Karate training Sally signed up to train with a local Karate Instructor in Stopsley, Luton, Bedfordshire. She continued to train there under the JKA UK until she reached 7th Kyu. In 1999 with her family she moved to South Devon where she then continued her training under the Instruction of her Husband Ash Hawkes under the Auspices of the E.K.O. (English Karate Organisation). In 2004 Sally took her Shodan under a panel of 3 Senior Instructors and passed with flying colors. Another 3 years would pass before Sally got her Nidan.
Sally is proud to be a Senior Executive of Chi Rei Kai and she is integral to the running and decision making process within the Organisation.
Sally is working towards her Sandan and is currently training hard and Teaching most days through out the week. Sally is a Clinical Nutritionalist and Sports and Massage Therapist. She runs her own business called Feel Better which occupies premises in Kingsbridge Town Centre.
